The ball of the joint provides a fulcrum that improves the mechanical efficiency of the deltoid muscle. The procedure is performed to treat rotator cuff tear arthropathy, a condition of the shoulder where arthritis develops against the background of severe rotator cuff deficiency. The operation may also be offered to patients who have inability to lift up the arm as a result of severe rotator cuff deficiency – sometimes referred to as “pseudoparalysis” of the shoulder.
